A Tucson man was found guilty of stealing more than $500,000 from a fraternity alumni organization with direct ties to the University of Arizona.
Attorney General Kris Mayes announced Michael Woolbright was convicted of five counts of fraud and one count of theft during his tenure as President of the Tucson Delta Chi Alumni Board.
“Mr. Woolbright repeatedly issued unauthorized checks and unauthorized wire transfers from an account belonging to Tucson Delta Chi Alumni Board, while concealing the money as legitimate payments and by withholding access to the Board’s financials from other members,” according to a press release.
The organization owns the Delta Chi fraternity house, located on 7th Street on the University of Arizona campus.
Current Alumni Board President Justin Brown said the verdict is “not a happy occasion for anyone,” in a statement posted to the Delta Chi website.
“While this verdict brings a sense of accountability and justice, it is not something to be celebrated. Mr. Woolbright’s actions nearly destroyed our fraternity entirely. The trust placed in him was deeply violated, and the impact of his misconduct has been felt across our alumni and active members alike,” he wrote. “As we move forward, our focus remains on strengthening the integrity and future of our organization. We are committed to reinforcing financial safeguards and ensuring that this kind of betrayal can never happen again.”
Woolbright’s sentencing is scheduled for April 28.
