Episode 1143

This week on Arizona Illustrated… we’ll introduce you to the only para swim team in the country; Quinton Antone is using traditional Tohono O’odham themes to blaze a new creative path; an innovative project is creating healthier food boxes, and meet the creative team at Cream Design and Print.

Para Swimming Team
The University of Arizona is home to the only collegiate para swim team in the United States, where swimmers with various disabilities unite under the hands of Laura Utsch. Skyler, Libby and Noah each adapted an overcame – like true champions.

Quinton Antone – Tohono O’odham Artistry
Quinton Antone is a multimedia artist of Tohono O’odham and Kiowa heritage, born and raised in Sells, Arizona, on the Tohono O’odham reservation. What sets Quinton apart is his ability to respectfully adapt ceremonial elements into secular art, making spiritual themes accessible to a broader audience. His creations are deeply rooted in storytelling, reflecting the rich tapestry of Native American folklore and cultural narratives. Quinton is dedicated to evolving his artistic voice, exploring new media.

FRESH Project
FRESH (Food and Resources Expanded to Support Health) is an innovative project managed by the School of Nutritional Sciences and Wellness at the University of Arizona to provide medically tailored food boxes and educational support to food insecure individuals who have or are at risk of developing diet-related disease. The project partners with El Rio Health, the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, and Pivot Produce to supply and distribute the boxes to qualified patients. Currently in its second iteration, FRESH2 involves a year-long study to quantify the effectiveness of the program on patients’ long term health and how that might positively impact provider costs.

CREAM
CREAM is a Tucson business that designs and prints some of the most iconic and memorable logos and T-shirts in town. Think Eegees, Exo Coffee and the Protect The Sonoran Desert Toad T-shirt. Meet the people behind CREAM and hear about how this unique business came to be.
